Republican Leaders Call for Removal of Defense Bill Anti-LGBTQ Provision

Republican Representatives Charlie Dent, Ileana Ros-Lehtinen, Carlos Curbelo, and Mike Coffman are urging the removal of a provision allowing discrimination on the basis of religion against the LGBTQ community in the National Defense Authorization Act.

The amendment as it stands exempts “any religious corporation, religious association, religious educational institution, or religious society” that receives a federal contract, applying to “any branch or agency of the federal government.”

This amendment rolls back President Obama’s executive order banning LGBTQ discrimination from federal contractors.

The amendment passed the committee with a vote of 33-29. Republicans voting against the amendment include New Jersey Rep. Frank LoBiondo and Nevada Rep. Joe Heck. The Rules Committee will determine whether the entire House will choose to remove the provision.
