AUF Senior Advisor Tyler Deaton issues response to NC Governor McCrory’s Executive Order 93
AUF Senior Advisor Tyler Deaton issued the following statement in response to the news of Governor McCrory’s Executive Order 93:
We thank Governor McCrory for his willingness to recognize the mistakes of HB2 and act decisively to fix some of the damage caused by HB2’s passage. The Governor’s executive order means LGBTQ North Carolinians can feel more secure knowing their government will now protect them against discrimination in government hiring and firing and certain other state employment practices.
This is a major milestone for North Carolina and it represents the start of a reconciliation process that needs to take place in the aftermath of HB2. The executive order itself references current anti-transgender law imposed by HB2, which is just another reminder of how sweeping and harmful HB2 is.
All eyes now turn to the General Assembly as it reconvenes later this month. They must continue the process of reconciliation and the only way to do that is to repeal HB2.
The LGBTQ community of North Carolina and all of its allies around the country should prioritize the singular goal of bringing repeal legislation to the floor of the General Assembly and persuading Speaker Tim Moore and President Pro Tem Phil Berger to allow this legislation to advance. Only a full and total repeal will undo the harm and discrimination inflicted by HB2.
