American Unity Fund Statement on Proposed Legislation in Wisconsin to Ban Transgender Students From School Facilities That Correspond With Their Gender Identity
Washington D.C. – Today, American Unity Fund joined with Wisconsin families and business leaders in opposition to a bill proposed by two lawmakers that would bar transgender students from using school facilities such as restrooms and locker rooms that correspond with their gender identity.
Tyler Deaton, Senior Advisor at American Unity Fund, stated, “There is no evidence to suggest that transgender students pose any harm to their classmates. This misguided legislation will only expose students to additional ridicule and humiliation by forcing them to either use facilities that do not correspond with their gender identity or to submit a written request to simply use a faculty restroom.”
“It makes no sense to revoke current non-discrimination school policies. Transgender students deserve to be treated equally.”
“This only highlights the urgent need for the Wisconsin legislature to act and expand protections for transgender citizens. Congress should also work towards a comprehensive and bipartisan federal law that would protect all gay and transgender Americans from discrimination in their daily lives.”
